We noticed what student protesters decided to hoist up their high school flagpole while ostensibly demonstrating against immigration reform. In Spanish this is called reconquista, the reconquering of Mexican land lost during the Mexican-American war (1846-48), and its appearance in Los Angeles this week adds a dark dimension to the entire immigration debate.
Immigrants from countries like Ireland, Poland, Italy, Bohemia, Germany and Greece emigrate because they are inspired by hopes for a new and better life, not redress for past indignities. In time, they become Americans who are proud of their heritage.
Something entirely different motivates the Hispanic radicals. Their inspiration is anti-Americanism, which they cheerfully articulate in banners proclaiming "This is our continent, not yours!" They claim citizenship, or at least the benefits of citizenship, to be theirs by right, rather than something to be earned. And their ultimate fantasy is no different than the radical Muslim immigrants living in the slums outside Paris: To retake what they think was formerly their ancestors' land, if not in name then in numbers. Tragically, they are able to dupe idealistic students into advancing their cause by masking their true intentions behind the facade of ethnic pride or civil rights. Nothing is more un-American, especially for those requesting American citizenship.
Well, technically reconquistas, this continent is not yours either. It belongs to the Chumash, Maidu, Miwok, Modoc, Mohave, Ohlone and Tongva.
Do the reconquistas envy the success of the United States vs. the problems of Mexico? Wouldn’t their energies be better spent fixing those problems?

UK Gun Control Failures: week of Mar. 20-25, 2006
While England has some of the strictest national gun control laws, here is this week’s list of UK violence that the laws didn’t stop:
A crackdown on gun crime, stabbings and alcohol-fuelled disorder was begun by Scotland Yard with a massive operation targeting the “men of violence” across London. Officers visited 300 addresses and made 75 arrests yesterday in the first stage of a week-long campaign to reverse rising levels of violent crime.
A man was arrested on suspicion of murdering his stepdaughter after her mother returned from work and found her dead. Sophie Comins, 13, was found in a bedroom by her mother, Mandy, on Saturday evening. She had been strangled.
The horror of the "brutal" attack which killed the assistant manger of the HSBC bank in Sutton has been relived by witnesses at the Old Bailey. The court was told a gang of men repeatedly stamped on and kicked Saad Ilham, 24, known as Bobby, in a busy street in Leicester Square.
A TEENAGER was yesterday ordered to be detained at Her Majesty's pleasure and serve a minimum of 14 years for murdering a schoolgirl she knifed through the heart at a 16th birthday party.
Mr Alveranga and Mr Austin, were shot in, or as they were leaving the pub, in Edgehill Close. They both died from a single bullet wound to the chest.
Middlesex OPP are investigating an armed robbery of the TD Canada Trust bank at 285 Main St, Lucan at 11:53 a.m. on November 2nd. A lone gunman armed with a .22 cal. rifle entered the bank wearing plaid PJ pants, black hooded sweatshirt, black bandana, sunglasses and a mask covering the lower part of his face.
Police hunting the killer of a woman whose body, riddled with stab wounds, was found by her 12-year-old daughter when she arrived home in the village of Frimley.
A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of his adopted sister, 10, who was stabbed at her parents’ house near Exeter.
A distressed boy who broke into the home of a man he knew and killed him with a hammer as he slept was put under supervision for three years by Liverpool Crown Court.
Police are looking for a man who set a 17-year-old girl on fire in a graveyard. She was attacked at 10.45pm as she walked home from a fish and chip shop.
More than 100 youths ‘armed to the teeth’ with knuckledusters and knives were striding up Crescent Road, Dukinfield, when police pounced and confiscated the weapons. The youths scattered, dumping sticks, bricks, hammers and wrenches. Officers also found websites had been used to arrange battles, often making references to meeting points and previous fights. They have since been closed down.
THREE Failsworth thugs who killed a father of four because he wouldn’t give them a light for a cigarette have been jailed. Mugilan Sutherman died from "catastrophic" injuries. He had been hit in the face by one attacker who was holding a metal peg. The other teenagers then stamped on his head and kicked it "like a football".

If the reason for gun control laws is to reduce violence and crime, the laws don’t work. How about treating the problems and not the symptom (guns)?

Now it is Navy chaplains being discriminated against!!
Another attempt to illegally make atheism our national religion!
It seems like yesterday I was writing about the Air Force chaplain policy. New read about the new Navy policy:A new Navy policy that encourages chaplains to use only "nonsectarian" language outside of divine services has prompted criticism that regulating prayer services violates the chaplains' First Amendment rights. Under new rules signed by Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter, chaplains of all faiths in the Navy are asked to consider the views of their audience before invoking specific religious beliefs in prayer.
"I'm very disappointed with the secretary of the Navy," said Navy chaplain Lt. Gordon James Klingenschmitt. "He's doing the opposite of what President Bush wants." Lt. Klingenschmitt is urging Mr. Bush to sign an executive order to allow military chaplains to pray according to their individual faith tradition. He said that if the president decides not to sign such an order, he might sue the Navy.
The Navy policy appears to be similar to that of the Air Force, which reads, "nondenominational, inclusive prayer or a moment of silence may be appropriate for military ceremonies."
If Congress can invoke the name of Jesus, why can't our military chaplains invoke the name of Jesus?
Note: Here is a good place to read the daily prayers said on the floor of the House and Senate. It is also a good place to check for what Congress did that day.Search other blogs for: Navy Chaplains or Air Force Chaplains or Military Chaplains or 1st Amendment or Freedom of Religion
Political Correctness and classic Science Fiction, TV, movies
It is the day after the Illinois primary election and I wanted to not think about politics for a day. I haven’t spent much time reading and watching science fiction lately. I thought about how I missed seeing the old classic science fiction TV shows from my childhood. I miss the 50s series “Science Fiction Theater”.
Then I thought about other shows I enjoyed watching on Saturdays. The old Charlie Chan movies. Too bad political correctness prevents them from being shown. Even then, I found the portrayal of Chan’s black servant uncomfortable to watch but they could just cut those scenes and show the rest.
For Christmas, I got the classic giant ant movie “THEM”. I was a little surprised to find my brother-in-law and nephew watching it the next morning.

Peaceful Religion: Afghan man faces death for Christian conversion
KABUL, Afghanistan -- An Afghan man could be sentenced to death on a charge of converting from Islam to Christianity. The trial is thought to be the first of its kind in Afghanistan and highlights a struggle between religious conservatives and reformists over what shape Islam should take here four years after the ouster of the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban regime. Abdul Rahman, 41, was arrested last month after his family accused him of becoming a Christian. During the one-day hearing, the defendant confessed that he converted from Islam to Christianity 16 years.Search other blogs for: Islam or Muslim or Religion of Peace or Christian
"We are not against any particular religion in the world. But in Afghanistan, this sort of thing is against the law," the judge said. "It is an attack on Islam."
Afghanistan's constitution is based on Shariah, Islamic law that is interpreted by many Muslims to require that any Muslim who rejects Islam be sentenced to death, said Ahmad Fahim Hakim, deputy chairman of the state-sponsored Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.

Ooh-Rah! Send the partisan press to boot camp.
Twelve times a year the Marine Corps recruit depot (Parris Island, SC ) hosts workshops for media and high school educators to allow them to witness -- and even attempt for themselves -- the daily activities of recruits. This week recruiters and public affairs officers guided about 70 educators from the New York and New Jersey region onto the yellow footprints, into the path of drill instructor's glare, through obstacle courses and even armed them with M-16 rifles. By the second day in the pristine late winter weather of the South, the inhabitants of the stereotypically cynical and cold North had adopted a hearty "Ooh-rah!"

A group of media and teachers from New York and New Jersey watch as three new Marine recruits arrive at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on Wednesday night, marking the start of their training.

The Saddam tapes
Audiotapes of Saddam Hussein and his aides underscore the Bush administration's argument that Baghdad was determined to rebuild its arsenal of weapons of mass destruction once the international community had tired of inspections and left the Iraqi dictator alone. In addition to the captured tapes, U.S. officials are analyzing thousands of pages of newly translated Iraqi documents that tell of Saddam seeking uranium from Africa in the mid-1990s.
Mr. Tierney said that the quote from the Saddam aide, and scores of others, show Saddam was rebuilding his once-ample weapons stocks. "The tapes show that Saddam rebuilt his program and successfully prevented the U.N. from finding out about it," he said. There also exists a quote from the dictator himself, who ordered the tapings to keep a record of his inner-sanctum discussions, that Mr. Tierney thinks shows Saddam planned to use a proxy to attack the United States. "Terrorism is coming ... with the Americans," Saddam said. "With the Americans, two years ago, not a long while ago, with the English I believe, there was a campaign ... with one of them, that in the future there would be terrorism with weapons of mass destruction."
Of the tapes released so far, Mr. Hoekstra said, "Everything [Saddam] is doing is saying, 'Let's take it and hide it' with a clear intent. 'As soon as this is over, we're going to be back after this.' " Some are convinced that Saddam moved his remaining weapons to Syria. They cite satellite photos of lines of trucks heading into the neighboring country before the invasion and the fact Saddam positioned his trusted Iraqi Intelligence Service agents at border crossings. Saddam planned to resume weapons of mass destruction production once the United Nations lifted economic sanctions.

Iraqi Mayor’s letter to departing US Regiment

In the Name of God the Compassionate and MercifulSource: Spirit of America
To the Courageous Men and Women of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who have changed the city of Tall’ Afar from a ghost town, in which terrorists spread death and destruction, to a secure city flourishing with life.
To the lion-hearts who liberated our city from the grasp of terrorists who were beheading men, women and children in the streets for many months.
To those who spread smiles on the faces of our children, and gave us restored hope, through their personal sacrifice and brave fighting, and gave new life to the city after hopelessness darkened our days, and stole our confidence in our ability to reestablish our city.
Our city was the main base of operations for Abu Mousab Al Zarqawi. The city was completely held hostage in the hands of his henchmen. Our schools, governmental services, businesses and offices were closed.
Our streets were silent, and no one dared to walk them. Our people were barricaded in their homes out of fear; death awaited them around every corner. Terrorists occupied and controlled the only hospital in the city.
Their savagery reached such a level that they stuffed the corpses of children with explosives and tossed them into the streets in order to kill grieving parents attempting to retrieve the bodies of their young.
This was the situation of our city until God prepared and delivered unto them the courageous soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who liberated this city, ridding it of Zarqawi’s followers after harsh fighting, killing many terrorists, and forcing the remaining butchers to flee the city like rats to the surrounding areas, where the bravery of other 3d ACR soldiers in Sinjar, Rabiah, Zumar and Avgani finally destroyed them.
I have met many soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment; they are not only courageous men and women, but avenging angels sent by The God Himself to fight the evil of terrorism.
The leaders of this Regiment; COL McMaster, COL Armstrong, LTC Hickey, LTC Gibson, and LTC Reilly embody courage, strength, vision and wisdom.
Officers and soldiers alike bristle with the confidence and character of knights in a bygone era. The mission they have accomplished, by means of a unique military operation, stands among the finest military feats to date in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and truly deserves to be studied in military science. This military operation was clean, with little collateral damage, despite the ferocity of the enemy. With the skill and precision of surgeons they dealt with the terrorist cancers in the city without causing unnecessary damage.
God bless this brave Regiment; God bless the families who dedicated these brave men and women.
From the bottom of our hearts we thank the families. They have given us something we will never forget.
To the families of those who have given their holy blood for our land, we all bow to you in reverence and to the souls of your loved ones. Their sacrifice was not in vain. They are not dead, but alive, and their souls hovering around us every second of every minute. They will never be forgotten for giving their precious lives. They have sacrificed that which is most valuable. We see them in the smile of every child, and in every flower growing in this land.
Let America, their families, and the world be proud of their sacrifice for humanity and life.
Finally, no matter how much I write or speak about this brave Regiment, I haven’t the words to describe the courage of its officers and soldiers. I pray to God to grant happiness and health to these legendary heroes and their brave families.

The new “orangeback” $10 bill and the “Bob Hope” nickel
Yesterday, I stopped by the grocery store. When the machine gave me my change, I saw I had another “Bob Hope” nickel. I keep asking my self “Why is bob Hope’s picture on a coin?”. Then I ask myself why are we spending money constantly redesigning our coins.
The cashier then handed me my receipt and my ten dollars in change but the bill was orange. I thought some kid had spilt his orange soda on the $10 bill. But looking at it closer, I saw it was brand new. America’s money is referred to as greenbacks around the world. Now we have the orangeback.
I can understand changing paper money to make it harder to counterfeit but I would have designed the money differently. On the front, I would have kept it the same except adding some security features. I do like the new portraits. On the back, I would have kept the outer edge exactly the same but with some security features. In the center, I would have added a color picture like the Jefferson Memorial surrounded by cherry blossoms.

Secret "Katrina" tapes released - More liberal BS
From Democrat.com
Transcript from the so-called secret tapes:
Brown was concerned about the local officials being able to handle things.
The liberals and the partisan press are making a big deal about President Bush not asking any questions. That is because the meeting was not for him but for local officials so of course he didn’t ask any questions. The local officials were suppose to ask the questions.
And the tapes reveal that there was no warning about breaches but that the levees would very likely be topped. For most, that means water comes in but the New Orleans pumps would handle it in a day or so.
The Discovery Channel has a good show on Katrina called Engineering Disasters. It shows exactly how the levees were breached and they were not blown up by President Bush.
Oh, and the federal government made the "secret" tapes available to the press months ago.

WASHINGTON (AP)—In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage. Bush didn't ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: "We are fully prepared."The way the liberals cut the last quote makes it seem that the federal government thought they wouldn't be able to handle things.
A top hurricane expert voiced "grave concerns" about the levees and then-Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown told the president and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that he feared there weren't enough disaster teams to help evacuees at the Superdome. "I'm concerned about ... their ability to respond to a catastrophe within a catastrophe," Brown told his bosses the afternoon before Katrina made landfall.
Transcript from the so-called secret tapes:
BROWN: In fact, let me just go ahead and (missing) and tell you what my priorities are and what my concerns are. Number one, you know that the Mayor has ordered the Superdome to be used as a shelter (missing) first resort. I didn't hear about any other shelters for people to go to as they left New Orleans. As you may or may not know, the Superdome is about 12 feet below sea level, so I don't know what the heck (missing). And I also am concerned about that roof. I don't know whether that roof is designed to stand— withstand a Cat. 5 hurricane. So not to be (missing) kind of gross here, but I'm concerned about NDMS and medical and DMORT assets and their ability to respond to a catastrophe within a catastrophe. So if I could get some sort of insight into what's going on in that Superdome, I think it would be very, very helpful.
